Press Release: Visit of SCO Secretary General to India, 07-08 May 2018
At the invitation of External Affairs Minister H.E.Mrs. Sushma Swaraj, the Secretary General of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization H.E. Mr. Rashid Alimov paid an official visit to New Delhi (India) on 7-8 May 2018.
SCO Secretary General Alimov’s visit to Indiahas helped to further strengthen India-SCO cooperation especially ahead of the SCO Summit to be held in Qingdao (China) on 9-10 June 2018 with the participation of India for the first time as a full member of SCO. External Affairs Minister Mrs. Sushma Swaraj held detailed discussions withSecretary General Alimov on the preparations for the forthcoming SCO Summit in Qingdao and the prospects for consolidating and further enhancing the role and authority of SCO as an influential intergovernmental organization. Minister of Road Transport and Highways Mr. Nitin Gadkari and Secretary General Alimov discussed the prospects for development of regional transportation interconnectivity and creating favorable conditions for international road transportation under the SCO framework. Secretary General Alimov also met the Commerce and Industry Minister Mr. Suresh Prabhu and the Minister of State (I/C) for Culture Dr. Mahesh Sharmaduring which he discussed the prospects for unlocking the potential for cooperation in Trade, Economic, Cultural and Humanitarian fieldsamong the SCO members.
During the visit, Secretary General paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial at Rajghat and also attended a master-class on Yoga at the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga in New Delhi.***
